Comparing Time Periods

See What Changed

The Compare report puts two date ranges side by side so you can see how your metrics moved: week over week, month over month, or against the same period last year.

Opening Compare

From a website, open the Compare view. In the controls bar, the date picker runs in compare mode: pick your main period and the period to compare it against.

What You See

  • Metrics with change indicators: visitors, sessions, events and more, each showing the percentage change between the two periods.
  • Overlaid chart: both periods drawn together so the shape of the change is obvious.
  • Comparison tables: pages, traffic sources, events, and devices, each with the change for that row, so you can see exactly what drove the difference.

Example

Compare June 1–15 with June 16–30 to spot a mid-month shift: maybe a campaign lifted a particular source, or a page lost traffic. The tables tell you which rows changed, not just the totals.

Tips

  • Compare equal-length periods for a fair read (15 days vs. 15 days, not 15 vs. 30).
  • For seasonal businesses, compare against the same period a year earlier rather than the immediately preceding one.
  • Pair Compare with UTM analytics to attribute a jump to a specific campaign.
